Due to rampant inflation in the 1920’s, the regular German currency was worthless. So in an attempt to bring the situation under control, the government introduced a new currency called Notgeld (Emergency Money).
Artists in each district took it as a golden opportunity to make the most beautiful Notgeld possible. Therefore, there is a lot of extremely beautiful and well-made notes which are highly collectible.
